Hi!
I’m James, a designer, researcher and company founder from London.
I’ve kept a portfolio career, which can be a little illegible. I follow my interests: applying the same handful of skills (design, research, visual communication, and software development) to different fields of science, technology and healthcare.
Today I split my time between two companies I started:
Science Practice finds practical applications for interesting research. I founded it in 2010, and we recently turned fifteen. We work in small teams of two or three designers and researchers, each building a practice around a scientific domain — turning knowledge from a field of science into tools, products, and programmes people can actually use.
Fora Health is a digital health product that helps patients and clinicians communicate and make decisions together. I co-founded it, and I lead its design and engineering team.
One of my more recent interests is economics. I have become I’m an active contributor to the Ergodicity Economics (EE) community, which is rebuilding economic theory on firmer mathematical foundations. I have presented at the three most recent EE conferences and I also help to organise the EE seminar series.
How I work
I like working in small teams and enjoy mentoring people. I love making things, mainly in software.
I write here, publish a podcast of audio clips I’ve found interesting called Audiolog, make small software tools, and post the occasional video.
Say hello
The best way to reach me is by email. I’m also on Bluesky and Mastodon.
